Gaylord Cancels Chula Vista Project
Gaylord Entertainment terminated its plans to develop a $1 billion resort and convention center in Chula Vista, Calif. According to the company, the cancellation was a result of "prolonged planning and approval processes, a complicated regulatory and legal structure and excessive off-site infrastructure costs."
Diversified Acquires HD Expo Stake
Diversified Business Communications has formed a partnership with Kristin Petrovich and acquired an equity stake in her company, HD Expo. Burbank, Calif.-based HD Expo has four annual events, including the same-named HD Expo, as well as 50 days of workshops and education for the high-definition and content creation communities.
McKay Joins World Market Center
World Market Center announced that tradeshow industry veteran Phillip McKay joined World Market Center in Las Vegas as senior vice president.
Internet Retailer Takes Top Prize
Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition was named overall fastest-growing show and fastest-growing tradeshow during the black-tie gala at the sixth annual Tradeshow Week Fastest 50 event Nov. 7-9 at the Hilton Baltimore in Baltimore.
Sands Posts Q3 $32 Million Net Loss
In its third-quarter earnings report, the Las Vegas Sands reported a net loss of $32.2 million, compared with a net loss of $48.5 million in the same period last year.

Tim Porter, a former 15-year veteran of Reed Exhibitions who managed its U.K.-based defense portfolio, has launched his own company, Anagram Events.
EHX Fall Becomes EHX@CES
Electronic House Expo will expand its partnership with the Consumer Electronics Assn. and launch EHX@CES in January 2010. The new show will replace EHX Fall, which will have its final showing Nov. 5-7 at the Long Beach (Calif.) Convention Center.
Former TSW Publisher to Green Media Enterprises
Adam Schaffer, most recently a group publisher with 1105 Media, is now vice president for sales and business development with Green Media Enterprises, which currently produces Green East in New York and Green West in Southern California. Schaffer was publisher of Tradeshow Week until August 2007.
GES' Parent Company Doubles Q3 Profits
Viad, GES Exposition Services' parent company, doubled its third-quarter net income to $16.8 million, compared with $8.5 million in the same period last year, a 96.3-percent increase. Paul B. Dykstra said the profits were a result of positive show rotation and repositioning initiatives at Exhibitgroup/Giltspur.
Stetson Departs Intl. Builders Show
Wayne Stetson is leaving his position as CEO of the Intl. Builders Show and senior vice president of the Natl. Assn. of Home Builders convention and meetings group effective Jan. 30. The Intl. Builders Show was No. 9 on the most recent Tradeshow Week 200.
E3 Will Be Back in 2009
Three years after the E3/Electronic Entertainment Expo was scrapped in favor of two separate invitation-only trade and consumer events, the Entertainment Software Assn. announced the show will return next year in its original form.
Allen Named CIC Board Chairman
Eric Allen, executive vice president of the Healthcare Convention & Exhibitors Assn., has been named chairman of a new streamlined board of the Convention Industry Council.
LACC Is LEED Certified
The Los Angeles Convention Center recently received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Existing Building certification, joining the ranks of a few other centers across the country that have proven their dedication to sustainability. LEED is administered by the U.S. Green Building Council.

According to the most recent Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority Executive Summary, convention attendance in the city for the month of August dropped 22 percent to 574,184 attendees from 739,215 attendees in the same period in 2007.
